I'm Eddie Davis and I'm the Coordinator of the Bachelor of Arts in Music Degree. The Bachelor of Arts in Music is a fantastic program really self-directed, a program that allows students to follow their own creative interests and their own kind of pathway through a music degree.
We've had students who focus on Music Scholarship or Musicology, Music Research. We've had students who focus on Performance, whether that's solo performance on an instrument or performing in ensembles. We've had students who focus on Composition and Songwriting that happens to be my own personal area of interest. I'm a Composer and I have taught classes in composition and songwriting here at the university.
Last semester, I did a classical songwriting workshop, where students from a number of different kinds of musical backgrounds all got together and every week, brought in original songs, and we spent class time workshopping them, listening through them, and talking about how to make them better. And students put portfolios of their best work together. It was really, really fun to watch the progress that these students had made.
The Bachelor of Arts in Music degree is completed by a capstone project where students can find a faculty advisor and work together on a project that summarizes the time that they have spent at the university. So I've advised students on creative projects, including recording their own EP or album, and I've worked with them on songwriting and putting together the mixing of the album. We've also had students who do independent research. We've had students go on to graduate degrees in Music Theory, people who have done their own papers and presentations on music-related topics.
Anyhow, it is a fantastic degree. If you have questions about it or would like any more information, please feel free to contact me via email. My email is on the website, or I can just tell it to you right now. It's dedavis@newhaven.edu. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you so much.
