Music and Sound Recording

Master the Art of Audio Recording, Media, and Communication

Technology is an essential part of our relationship with sound. Recording studios, theaters, social media platforms, film and television production, stadiums, and game studios rely on the expertise of sound engineers to function. Contemporary compositions for popular artists, film, and orchestras are facilitated by the expanded capabilities of the latest musical interfaces.

Our Bachelor of Arts degree in Music & Sound Recording is built around the philosophy that sound engineers should know the art form they are recording. To this end, our students take courses in three interrelated areas: music history, theory, and aesthetics; sound recording methodology and technique; and musicianship.

Learn More about Music and Sound Recording

Hi, my name is Simon Hutchinson, I'm Coordinator for Music Technology. And I'd like to tell you a little bit about music and sound recording at the University of New Haven. We're very proud of our liberal arts approach to Music Technology here where we teach existing industry standards alongside skills to think beyond the standards.

So future leaders of Music, Music Industry, Music Technology study together here in a close-knit environment, creating an incubator for creativity and lifelong connections. Our philosophy is that by combining hands-on work in our studios with discussions of theoretical foundations, our students leave the university prepared to be real innovators in the changing media landscape.

To that end, in addition to our core curriculum in Music Technology, we're continuously coming up with courses that examine new and emerging technology. This includes new classes in Game Audio, in Hip Hop Technology and Production, and a variety of examinations on what music means and could mean in society.

We offer two degrees in Music and Sound Recording a BA and a BS. The recording classes in these two degrees are the same, you'll be taking the same studio courses with us. What's different is that students in the BS take courses at the College of Engineering, studying calculus, electronics, circuits, and other technical skills to support their work. Students in the BA, on the other hand, have more electives and can use these electives to pursue minors or other interests such as Accounting, Digital Media, Communications, and Marketing.

We're thrilled to offer a number of opportunities off-campus including internships, the study away program in Nashville, and student work at Powerstation New England. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at shutchinson@newhaven.edu. We wish you the very best of luck with your decision.
