Hi, my name is Dr. Rachel Turlough, and I'm a faculty member in the Psychology department. And I thought I would just spend a minute or two, providing you with an overview of the Psychology curriculum and the department. I want to first say that we have an amazing team of full-time faculty members who come from a variety of different backgrounds. In terms of training, some of us are Clinical Psychologists, some of us are Experimental Psychologists, some of us have a specialization in Forensic Psychology. Some of us are cognitive psychologists, and we offer students the opportunity to learn from us having had experience in the field that we bring into the classroom.
Students have the opportunity to declare one of four different concentrations within the major. So the majors are Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and then declare a concentration in either General Psych which allows you some freedom and flexibility in terms of the courses that you take. We have a concentration in Forensic Psychology, which offers you the opportunity to take a number of classes that focus on a subfield in psychology that most people don't get to experience until graduate school. And the same for Clinical Psych.
And the same for our newest concentration, which we're really excited about is called Community and Society, which blends Community Psychology, Social Psychology, and Sociology. So to think about individuals in context, think about the greater social forces that act on people. And so those four concentrations, General, Forensic, Clinical, and Community and Society are the ones that we offer. And we have faculty members who have expertise in all of those areas.
We're also excited to announce our newest program, which is a 4+1 program in Community Psychology, that means that you spend four years getting your Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a concentration in Community and Society. And then in one more year, you get your Master's degree in Community Psychology. So it's five years in total, with a Master's degree at the end. So we're really excited about that.
We we have our students engage in learning outside of the classroom as part of the curriculum, we have our students getting involved in faculty members' research with them. We have students who study abroad, anywhere in the world and many studying abroad at our Italy campus. We have students doing internships in the greater New Haven area working at different agencies, nonprofit organizations, research labs. And so we really hope to offer our students a very enriched learning experience that involves both in-classroom learning and out-of-class classroom learning.
We also have devised a curriculum that lends itself easily to declaring a minor in something of interest, whether it be Criminal Justice, which is a very common minor for our majors, as well as Sociology, maybe even more common Race and Ethnic Studies, Communication. There are a number of minors that a student might declare, which complement their Psychology major very well. So it's a robust program. It's a diverse group of faculty, who care about our students, we become your academic advisors, we come become your professors, class sizes are small 20 to 30. We know you by name, we meet with you regularly. And we really get to know you and you get to know us.
And so the curriculum provides a really solid foundation in Psychology that you could take to graduate school in the field, or you could take to a career outside of the field, who doesn't want to hire a student or an applicant who can think critically, who knows how to consume scientific information, who can communicate well, these are the skills that we offer our majors. These are the skills that you come out of our program having. And so those are very applicable to graduate school and a career in Psychology, but they also extend to other areas and other fields. So even if you don't want to spend your life working in Psychology, it's a worthwhile degree. And so hopefully, we'll get the opportunity to meet you and to tell you a little bit more about our program. Thanks for listening. Bye Bye.
