Hello, everyone. I'm David Myers, Chairperson of the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of New Haven. And I want to thank you for your interest in our program, and encourage you to learn more about what we have to offer.
As a faculty member, there are many things that I appreciate about our university and our department, perhaps most importantly, the quality of the people that we have here and the opportunities that we have for students' success. I want to tell you more about these things. And to do so I'm going to use our departmental webpage as a guide.
To begin, we are very proud to be part of the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences. In addition to Criminal Justice and Forensic Science, we also have programs and National Security, Homeland Security, Fire Science, Emergency Management, and other programs like Public Administration.
What this means for you, you have many choices. I'm going to talk in a little bit about the choices you have within Criminal Justice. But if you decide to come here, and you decide you want to change majors, all of those programs are available to you. Another thing we have here are a variety of graduate programs in those same disciplines. You may choose later at some point to pursue a graduate program or you may be able to apply and enter as a direct entry student, meaning that as a first year student, you'd already be admitted to graduate school. So that's something that you can think more about, and also talk to your Admissions Counselor about.
As I mentioned, within our program, we do have various opportunities, and not many universities across the country have all of these types of opportunities. For example, we have six concentrations to choose from. They're listed here, on this website, and other places you can find out more information about them. But I believe that there is not another program in the country that gives you the choices that we provide, and the quality of the faculty we provide across these different areas.
Investigative services is our oldest and largest concentration. But the other concentrations we have are crime analysis, crime, victim services, corrections, juvenile justice and delinquency prevention, and then police science, all are thriving, and we have many, many student options and activities in these areas.
Next thing I'll hit on is the value in your degree from the University of New Haven and in our particular program and the other programs in our college. There are many different sources of information that rank universities and rank programs. College Factual is one of them that uses student-based data. And within this website, you could spend some time looking at how highly we are ranked across all the programs in our college and including in Criminal Justice. So again, this is important for you to think about because you have so many options, you may be considering several options at this point more than several. You want to be sure that the option you choose does give you value when you graduate because you will be investing considerable time and money.
Next thing I'll mention and encourage you to spend time exploring is our faculty web pages. We have right now 23 full-time faculty. They cover not only the six different concentration areas, but also many other areas of interest, both within Criminal Justice directly and other relevant fields like drug and alcohol use, mental health, the private sector, and private industry. There are many and a growing number of options available for our students who graduate. So you're not just getting a degree in Criminal Justice and limited to something like working in law enforcement, although many of our students do go into law enforcement. Many of our students go into a variety of other professions and go on to graduate school.
So our faculty are experienced in all of these areas. Most have both work experience in the field, as well as strong academic experience and research experience. So if you click on this button that says, "Meet Our Faculty," you'll be able to explore the field equity bios and learn about all of our faculty members.
Next thing I want to mention is our vision and mission statements. These are things that I, again feel make us very unique. The vision statement reveals what we are striving for, and how we want to prepare our students for the future. And our mission statement identifies the key things that we seek to carry out on a daily basis and throughout our semesters to ensure that our students are prepared for success, and we are doing the best job possible in generating that success.
Although the vision and mission statement is our list of values, we spent a considerable time you know thinking about these statements and this list in terms of our values. These are things we believe in, that are important both our faculty and our students. And they're things that we believe if you embrace these values and learn how to apply them in your career, it's going to make your career that much more successful, but also contribute to a safer and healthier society. So we encourage you to really think about these values, the type of -- not only the student but person that you want to be -- and incorporate that into your decision making.
Although that information, there's a great deal of information pertaining to our students and our students' success, we have a very large and thriving program that provides many different experiential learning opportunities, internships, Co-Op placements, a community living and learning area for Criminal Justice students in our in one of our dorms, opportunities to work with faculty on research, mentioned earlier opportunities to go on for graduate education.
We also have a variety of student clubs that are extremely active, both in things like bringing speakers to campus, doing community service work, and going to conferences, also competing in many competitions and winning a variety of awards. So in terms of the opportunities, you have it. They are not limited to our curriculum are in the classroom, you will have more opportunities to do great things, probably than you have time enough to pursue. The challenge will be identifying the ones that are most important to you and then taking advantage of the opportunities that are there.
All of this is more information regarding our graduates and some information here on compensation. And then you have the opportunity to go into different courses and our curriculum and examine the coursework you would complete within our concentrations.
Lastly, these different buttons down here with the photos provide a lot more information. And I would encourage you to explore what's their terms of career development also mentioned that we have an extremely large alumni base, literally 10s of 1000s of alumni have graduated from our program and particularly our college. They are very active in staying in touch with us. And they're always looking to assist our current students with things like internships and career opportunities. And we have an excellent Career Development Center that assists with that as well.
So I'm going to end there and encourage you to collect additional information. Hopefully, you'll join us in things like our open houses and other enhanced learning opportunities. I very much look forward to meeting you sometime, hopefully on campus. And if you have any questions, and my name is David Myers, Chairperson of the Department of Criminal Justice.
