Hi, prospective students. My name is Cassandra Champagne and about 10 years ago, I was sitting in your exact shoes trying to figure out, "Where should I go to college?" Ultimately, I ended up coming here to the University of New Haven to study Civil Engineering.
And now about a decade later, I'm back as a faculty member. So come on a little tour with me. And I'm going to tell you all about why I not only chose University of New Haven the first time around as a student but why I'm now back as a faculty member, let's go!
First and foremost, it's really important to choose an ABET-accredited Engineering program like ours here at the University of New Haven. This is going to be really important after you graduate when you go to apply for your professional engineering licensure.
So that being said, we're at the first stop on our floor today. So this is the Concrete Lab and it looks like there's actually a couple of students studying some concrete aggregates. Let's go take a look. Hey guys! So we're making a video here for prospective students. What do you guys think it's like taking classes here at U New Haven?
Taking classes here at the University of New Haven is very intuitive where a great Engineering staff is always there to reply to your emails and always there for you day-to-day.
Yeah, and after I agree. I mean, we're also in really small groups like three of us and I feel like if I ask a professor question, they always get back to me. And I don't feel like a number here.
Absolutely. Another good thing about this university is that provides opportunity for all cultures and ethnicities, and allows them to accomplish the goals that they always wanted to.
So not only do we have our dedicated full-time faculty members, but we also bring in leading industry professionals to teach some of our classes and our students really enjoy getting to learn from the real-world projects that they share with the class.
And now here, we're at our second lab on the tour. This is the Mechanics Lab, let's take a look at what they're doing here. I'm here today making a video for prospective students and I'm wondering if you guys have anything that you want to share with them about how our program is preparing you for your work after graduation?
Well, one thing I really liked about our program is that we are required to have an internship and they make it very easy to actually find an internship. There's always alumni and faculty sending out information about where we could do an internship.
The job placement percentage at this school is really high. So I always have a little bit of a secure feeling about getting a job after graduating.
In addition to helping our students secure internships and jobs, we also reach out to our talented alumni network to set up job shadows and field trips so our students can get a good idea of what they and life of a Civil Engineer actually looks like.
And now here are their third lab on the tour. This is our Hydraulics Lab. And it looks like there's something going on here. Let's go check it out. Hey guys.
Hey Professor.
Are you working on your research project for the NAPA [inaudible]?
Yes, they are [inaudible] wind turbines that...
Some gauges hooked up there and we're gonna be looking at the internal forces of the number down there to try and determine the most energy-efficient way to raise and lower turbines.
That's really neat. Say, I'm doing a video here for prospective students. What would you tell them about how you got involved other Engineering majors on campus?
One thing I would highly recommend is something that I did my first year was during the enhanced learning community which is where you live in the same building with all the other Engineering students.
Additionally, you can join our student chapters. For example, were both part of the American Society of Civil Engineers or ASCE Student Chapter here at the university, where we have been learning leadership, networking skills, as well as making lifelong friends.
Awesome, thanks, guys. I'll let you back to work. So just like him, I was also the President of ASCE when I was a student here. And we had a really great time every single year competing against all the other local Civil Engineering schools to see who could design, build, and grow the best concrete canoe. And if you believe it they all actually floated.
But that doesn't sound like your cup of tea, that's totally okay. The university also has over 200 student organizations so there's truly something for everybody. But at last, we are at the last lab on our tour, let's go take a look at the Structures Lab.
Hey professor!
So I'm doing a video here for prospective students. And I'm wondering if you can talk to them about the types of learning opportunities that you've gone outside of the typical classroom setting here at University of New Haven?
Yeah, I really enjoy my hands-on lab classes. I have also done service-learning classes where I can do sort of a classroom and get back to the community at the same time.
Yeah, and one thing that caught my interest in New Haven was studying abroad at the university students on campus in Prato, Italy.
Great, thanks, guys. So if you end up enjoying your time here at the University of New Haven as much as we all have, then you can also consider enrolling in our 4+1 program where you get to be here an additional year and you earn both your Bachelor's and your Master's degrees in five years. This will save you time, money, and make you even more competitive in today's job market. So with that being said, we really hope that you'll decide to join us here at the University of New Haven. Go Chargers!
Man, this was a long lab. What are you guys do it afterward? Toby's Pizza after this.
Naw man, we should go to Sally's, that's where it's at.
[Inaudible]
Hey did you get this at the football game tonight?
Yeah, I'm so excited too. Dan's going to perform today?
Oh, maybe I'll see you there?
Yeah, I'm excited and since it's only ten minutes away from Downtown New Haven, um, why don't we meet up after dinner?
Sounds good.
Alright, see you then.
