Welcome to the University of New Haven Marketing presentation. I'm excited to be here with you today. My name is Angeli Gianchandani. I am a professor at the University and I teach Global Brand Marketing and Communications. Today, I'm going to share with you why Marketing as a major is an opportunity for you to unlock your creativity.
So what do Marketers do? Big question. Well, according to the Bureau of Labor Stats, they monitor market trends, creative advertising campaigns, develop pricing strategies, and targeting strategies based on demographic data. And they work with companies to develop awareness for what they offer, what their products and services are about. I wanted to share with you this little this slide that gives you an overview. What is marketing? What is it used for? And in every marketing class, in every Marketing 101 class, you will hear the four P's. It's about product, price, promotion, and place. And that's the core of where marketing starts.
As we look at Marketing, we are challenged to shape and inform consumers on their choices. So a little bit more about Marketing. Marketing is about influencing consumer decisions. It's constant advertising. It's connecting with your customers in an emotional way. It's shaping the context. How are you delivering your message? It's trend-setting. You're creating trends, you're getting people on board. And it's attention management, how long can you hold the attention of your customer.
Marketing really focuses on increasing the market share, through attracting and retaining new customers, it's really a very effective way to connect with your consumers. And you're able to then really shape their behaviors. Marketing has so many different areas. So it's not limited. It's an opportunity to really dive in and be very creative in different elements. If you're interested in strategy, you're interested in big data, you're interested in technology or research, management-- Marketing has all of these elements that you can use your knowledge and power to make a difference in a company.
So why marketing as a career? Well, if you enjoy persuading people, convincing people. If you love studying habits, and consumer behaviors, Marketing is a career that can help you utilize all of these talents. And when you think about Marketing, it is so relevant for businesses to grow. It's a growth opportunity. There are global opportunities when it comes to careers. You can work for a company based in the US that has offices all over the world. Marketing offers excellent salary opportunities. And there's plenty of growth. There's [an] opportunity to take your skill set, whether it's in advertising or PR and sales, they all collide and there's [an] opportunity to continue to move on in companies. There's so many different avenues when it comes to Marketing. So this is just a sample to get you to think about the areas you would be interested in.
So why study at the University of New Haven, particularly Marketing? Well, it's an exciting place to be right now. The University of New Haven offers smaller classes. Students have direct access to their professors. And they're able to engage with you directly and support you with the tools you need to be successful. Another element that is so super dynamic and what I really enjoy is the experiential learning elements. It's hands-on. It's hands-on in that these classes develop you, and they prepare you for your career journey. There are also a variety of Marketing courses. You have a diverse mix of students and professors within your classes.
There are internship opportunities, working experiences offered throughout your journey at the University of New Haven. You'll have guidance from outside experts from an internship, they will become your mentors. And mostly, what's very critical is the career success. There is a robust alumni network that's actively supporting the University of New Haven up and coming students who are ready to flourish in their career journey. So I hope this gives you a really good overview of why Marketing as a professional, and really thinking about the opportunities that it would be for you as a student at the University of New Haven.
